01Assessment
A full inventory of the customizations, integrations and data volume in your current AX environment.
AX 2009 and 2012 are out of Microsoft support. We carry your customizations, data and business logic onto current Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, keeping what works and modernizing what doesn't.
Every year on AX adds risk and cost. Here's what changes when you move.
| Area | AX 2009 / 2012 | Dynamics 365 F&O |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | On-premise servers you maintain | Microsoft-managed cloud infrastructure |
| Updates | Manual, high-risk version upgrades | Continuous updates, tested before rollout |
| Reporting | Custom SSRS reports, limited self-service | Native Power BI embedded reporting |
| Customizations | Deep code-level modifications | Extensions that survive future updates |
| Mobile access | Little to none | Native mobile workspace apps |
| Support talent | Shrinking, increasingly expensive | Broad, current Microsoft partner ecosystem |
Microsoft provides an upgrade for AX 2012 R2 and R3, and a data migration for AX 2009. Which one applies to you shapes the whole project.
| Area | AX 2012 R2 / R3 | AX 2009 |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft support | Ended: AX 2012 R2 on April 12, 2022; R3 on January 10, 2023 | Ended April 12, 2022 (AX 2009 SP1) |
| Microsoft's route | Upgrade: code upgrade and data upgrade tools, run through Lifecycle Services | Migration: the AX 2009 Data migration tool is the only supported path |
| Your data | The AX 2012 database is upgraded, so history comes across | Tables are mapped to Dynamics 365 data entities and moved by legal entity; you choose how much history to bring |
| Your customizations | Custom code is brought forward and reworked as extensions, or replaced by standard features | Code does not carry across; what you still need is rebuilt as extensions |
| Older releases | AX 2012 RTM is first brought to a supported release before upgrading | AX 2009 RTM and earlier versions are assessed case by case |

Your AX system keeps running until the day you switch, and you choose that day.
A full inventory of the customizations, integrations and data volume in your current AX environment.
Each customization is mapped to a native F&O feature, an extension or a Power Platform solution.
Data and logic move across in parallel environments and are validated against your live AX system.
A scheduled cutover with a defined rollback window, so the switch happens on your terms.
We plan for each of them from day one, so none of them turns into a go-live surprise.
We reverse-engineer logic that was never written down, before it becomes a go-live surprise.
Years of AX data often carry quiet inconsistencies. We validate before migration, not after.
F&O is different enough from AX that we scope real training time, not a one-hour walkthrough.
No. Extended support ended on April 12, 2022 for AX 2009 SP1, AX 2012 and AX 2012 R2, and on January 10, 2023 for AX 2012 R3. Since then Microsoft has released no security fixes, hotfixes or regulatory updates for any AX version.
The business logic, yes, where you still need it. Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations doesn't allow changes to Microsoft's own code, so customizations become extensions that survive Microsoft's updates. From AX 2012, custom code is brought forward and reworked; from AX 2009, it's rebuilt. Some older customizations are now covered by standard features, so the assessment sorts them into keep, replace and retire.
From AX 2012 R2 or R3, the database is upgraded, so history comes with it. From AX 2009, you choose what to migrate: usually master data, open transactions and balances, plus as much history as you need. Older detail can stay in a read-only AX copy or a reporting database. How we reconcile migrated data.
An upgrade keeps your data, setup and processes and gets you onto a supported system fastest. A reimplementation starts clean on standard Dynamics 365 and suits businesses whose processes have changed a lot since AX went live. Many projects land in between: upgrade first, then improve. The assessment gives you the trade-offs for your system before you decide.
It depends mainly on how many customizations and integrations you have, your data volume and the number of legal entities. Your AX system keeps running until cutover, and the assessment gives you a realistic timeline and cost before you commit. Read our AX 2012 planning guide.
Yes. Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations is licensed by subscription, per user per month, rather than the perpetual licences most AX customers bought. As a Microsoft Indirect Reseller (CSP) we size and supply them. See licence types.
A scoped assessment tells you the real cost and timeline, before you commit to anything.
